Giving us access to your Shopify store

the collaborator route, done cleanly

To keep your ecommerce bookkeeping accurate, we need to work inside your Shopify store — and Shopify's collaborator access is the right way to give it to us. It sits separately from your own login, doesn't take up one of your staff seats, and you can withdraw it in seconds. Setting it up takes a few minutes and three small pieces of admin.

Why collaborator access, and not a staff login

A staff login would cost you a seat and blur the line between your team and ours. Collaborator access is Shopify's purpose-built route for agencies and accountants: it's kept distinct from your own users, scoped to only what we need, fully visible to you, and revocable whenever you like. Shopify also expires it automatically after ninety days of inactivity, so it can never quietly linger in the background.

What we need from you first

Two things. The first is your store's myshopify.com address — the one showing in your browser bar when you're logged into the admin, for example example-store.myshopify.com. The second is your collaborator request code: a four-digit code Shopify uses so that only people you've shared it with can request access. You'll find it under Settings, then Users and permissions, in the Security section. Send both to your usual point of contact at Practice and we'll take it from there.

Approving our request

Once we have your URL and code, we submit the request from our Shopify partner account. To approve it, open Settings, then Users and permissions, and you'll see the pending request from Practice. Have a look at the access we've asked for, and accept it. That's the setup complete.

Staying in control

The access is always yours to remove. Go to Settings, then Users and permissions, select the Practice collaborator account, and remove it — there's no need to tell us first, though we'd always rather you did if something's changed. Combined with Shopify's automatic ninety-day expiry, this means access only ever exists for as long as it's genuinely useful.

If you get stuck

If any step doesn't look the way we've described — Shopify moves things around from time to time — anyone on the Practice team is happy to walk it through with you, on a quick call or by email. It's a five-minute job and we'd rather do it alongside you than have you wrestle with it.

If you'd rather not do it yourself, your Practice team will set this up with you live — most clients are up and running inside a single short call.
