Strategic finance for a gallery challenging the status quo
Art
From its crisp, light-filled space in Fitzrovia to its presence at major international art fairs in Paris, Miami and Chicago, Edel Assanti curates a programme that speaks to the complexities of contemporary life - from the tension between doubt and certainty to the shifting interplay of manual work and technology.
“The gallery deals in big ideas that translate for its audience. We don’t use verbose language, but nor do we dumb down. We like to push the boundaries of what a gallery can do.”
Jeremy Epstein, co-founder
Since its beginnings as an itinerant project space in 2009, Edel Assanti has grown in scale and ambition. Its focus on narrative-driven work has remained constant, even as the complexity of running the gallery has deepened.
Co-founder Jeremy Epstein had long steered the gallery’s finances. But with a new physical space in London, growing artist representation, and expanding international presence the business model became increasingly intricate, and the founders knew they needed support.
“In our first meeting with Nick, it was clear that they were different. Practice flips the typical cookie-cutter approach; they have fewer clients, deeper relationships and work in incredible depth.”
Jeremy Epstein, co-founder
Edel Assanti began working with Practice in 2022. The first step was to build a five-year financial plan: a shared framework that mapped out the gallery’s creative and business ambitions. This led to an overhaul of core bookkeeping systems and restructuring accounting systems to allow for precise forecasting, sound budgeting and clear strategic decisions.
“Practice is brilliant at translating a war chest of strategies that my business partner and I come up with and showing us what would actually happen if we pulled particular levers in the business.”
Jeremy Epstein, co-founder
What began as a financial planning exercise has evolved into a lasting creative partnership. With nuanced understanding of the art world, Practice now supports Edel Assanti with scenario planning and through quarterly board meetings – creating space for reflection, clarity and ambition.
“They listen with an enormous amount of empathy, and really get our business and the complicated world we operate in, then sift and synthesise everything we say into a financial model” - Jeremy Epstein, co-founder
